The purpose of the Training Tests is to provide students with an opportunity to quickly become familiar with the software and interface features of the Smarter Balanced tests. A Training Test is available for each of grade bands 3–5, 6–8, and high school, and offers six to nine items per grade band in each content area (i.e., English-language arts and mathematics). The Training Tests includes new item types and universal tools, designated supports, and accommodations.

Smarter Balanced is a state-led consortium developing assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics that are designed to help prepare all students to graduate high school college- and career-ready.

The National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) is a project led by five centers and 25 states (14 core states and 11 Tier II states) to build an alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards (AA-AAS) for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. The goal of the NCSC project is to ensure that students with the most significant cognitive disabilities achieve increasingly higher academic outcomes and leave high school ready for post-secondary options.
